Common Aging-in-Place problems

What San Antonio homeowners tell us before they call

A bathroom that's becoming a fall risk

Step-in tubs, high-threshold showers, and slippery tile floors become real safety issues as mobility changes. The fix is accessible design done in premium finishes, not clinical retrofits.

Grab bars that look like a hospital

Standard institutional grab bars ruin a bathroom's look. We install blocking behind tile during construction so bars blend in or can be added later without touching the tile.

Waiting until it's an emergency to modify

Proactive aging-in-place modifications cost far less than emergency retrofits after a fall. Curbless showers, comfort-height fixtures, and wider doorways are easier and cheaper when planned ahead.

What we do

Aging-in-Place (CAPS) in San Antonio, the design-build way

Last updated: June 24, 2026

Aging-in-place doesn't have to look clinical. We deliver zero-threshold showers, grab-bar blocking, comfort-height fixtures, barrier-free flooring, and motion lighting using the same premium finishes as our luxury remodels, so empty-nesters can stay in the home they love, comfortably and safely.

Aging-in-Place (CAPS) detail

What's included in your Aging-in-Place project

  • Zero-threshold / curbless showers
  • Grab bars and reinforced blocking
  • Barrier-free flooring and wider doorways
  • Comfort-height fixtures
  • Motion-sensing lighting
  • Universal design throughout

Aging-in-place that doesn’t look like aging-in-place

The phrase “aging-in-place” still triggers a mental image of medical-supply showrooms — beige tile, exposed grab bars, fluorescent lighting. That’s not what we build. Done right, an aging-in-place remodel looks identical to a high-end luxury remodel; the accessibility is invisible.

What we actually change

In the bathroom:

  • Curbless / zero-threshold shower — a flat transition from bathroom floor into the shower, draining to a linear drain
  • Grab-bar blocking — 2x10 reinforcement at all standard grab-bar locations behind tile (so bars can be added later without demo)
  • Comfort-height fixtures — toilets, vanities, and shower seats sized for easier transfer
  • Lever-handle faucets — easier to operate than knobs
  • Frameless glass enclosures — clear sightlines, easier cleaning, no door threshold

Through the rest of the house:

  • Wider doorways (32” clear minimum) on bath and bedroom entries
  • Lever-handle hardware throughout
  • Barrier-free flooring — minimal transitions between rooms
  • Motion-sensing lighting in hallways and bathrooms
  • Single-level living conversions where appropriate (primary suite on main floor)

The blocking detail that matters most

The single biggest mistake in aging-in-place remodels is skipping the blocking. If you reinforce the walls behind tile during construction, you can add a grab bar in five minutes. If you skip it, adding a grab bar later means tearing into the tile.

We add 2x10 backing at every standard grab-bar location — even when no bar is being installed today. The cost during the remodel is negligible. The cost to add it later is thousands.

Why homeowners pick us

Same process. Same crew. Same fixed price.

It still looks like a luxury bath

Aging-in-place built right doesn't read 'medical.' Curbless showers with frameless glass, floating comfort-height vanities, and tile that wraps the room — the universal design is invisible.

We build the blocking now, install the grab bars later

We reinforce the walls behind tile during construction so grab bars can be added (or moved) anytime without tearing into the wall. The blocking is invisible until you need it.

Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist principles

Comfort-height toilets and vanities, lever handles, motion lighting, wider doorways, and barrier-free transitions — applied where they make daily life better, not just where they meet a checklist.

FAQ

Common Aging-in-Place (CAPS) Questions

Common questions about our design-build remodeling process.

What is CAPS-style remodeling?
CAPS — Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist — is the industry credential for accessible/universal-design remodeling. We apply the same principles: zero-threshold transitions, reinforced blocking, comfort-height fixtures, and barrier-free finishes.
How much does an aging-in-place remodel cost?
Most aging-in-place bath remodels run $20,000–$45,000. Whole-home universal-design updates (wider doorways, barrier-free transitions, lever hardware throughout) can reach $70,000+.
Will the changes look medical or clinical?
Not when we do them. Curbless showers, comfort-height vanities, and reinforced blocking can all be hidden inside a luxury finish package — frameless glass, marble, brushed metal hardware.
Can you add grab bars later without tearing into the wall?
Yes, if we reinforce the blocking during the remodel. We add 2x10 blocking behind tile at all standard grab-bar locations so future bars (or moves) don't require demo.
What about the rest of the house — not just the bath?
We do whole-home aging-in-place when needed: wider doorways, lever-handle hardware, barrier-free thresholds, motion-sensing lighting, kitchen reach accessibility, and single-level living conversions.
